Breaking the Ice: Talking to Your Patients About Naloxone

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Due to the considerable number of risk factors for overdose in patients with OUD or those on high dose opioids for chronic pain, it is imperative that health care professionals (HCPs) are familiar with the use of naloxone and its availability. Naloxone products for home use by patients or caregivers can reduce the risk of overdose deaths in both patients and household contacts; therefore, it is imperative that HCPs educate patients who are at risk for overdose on its role and means of administration.

The final episode of this CMEOCast podcast series highlights the multitude of risk factors for opioid overdose that clinicians treating patients with chronic pain need to be aware of, as well as strategies for counseling patients about naloxone.

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
-Recognize risk factors for overdose in patients with OUD or those on high dose opioids for chronic pain.
-Develop and implement strategies for educating patients who are at risk for overdose on the role of naloxone.

The following learning objectives pertain only to those requesting CNE or CPE credit:
