Transformative Care for Invasive Mold Infections: Strategies that Make a Difference in Patient Outcomes: Case 2: Cutaneous Lesions Post CAR T-Cell Therapy

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is directed to infectious disease physicians, critical care physicians, hospitalists, surgeons, pathologists/clinical microbiologists, hematologists/oncologists, pharmacists, pediatric infectious disease specialists, transplant specialists, and other healthcare providers responsible for the management of invasive mold infections.

Program Overview
In this second activity of the Transformative Care for Invasive Mold Infections: Strategies that Make a Difference in Patient Outcomes initiative, Dr Matthew Lunning presents a case illustrating the challenge of addressing prevention, diagnosis, and management of an infectious complication in a patient undergoing CAR T-cell therapy. As we move through the stages of the case, Dr Lunning shares the hematology/oncology perspective on management, while the additional faculty provide infectious diseases, pulmonary/critical care, and microbiology perspectives. The pre-test and posttest questions will allow you to benchmark your practices and evaluate your institutional barriers to appropriate care of patients with IFD in the hematology/oncology setting. We hope you find this text-based content helpful as you strive to achieve the optimal, multidisciplinary care of patients with invasive fungal disease.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Define changing epidemiologic patterns related to invasive mold infections in the United States
Identify barriers to appropriate diagnosis, speciation, antifungal susceptibility testing, and selection of antifungal therapy in the management of invasive molds
Evaluate the limitations of currently available antifungal regimens in the management of invasive molds, including both Aspergillus and non-Aspergillus molds
Implement strategies to improve antifungal stewardship in the management of invasive molds, thereby improving patient outcomes
