Overview / Abstract: |
Spasticity, a motor disorder characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes with exaggerated tendon jerks, results from hyper excitability of the stretch reflex. It often causes damage to one or more areas of the central nervous system; therefore, treatment goals should aim to provide symptom relief, ease patient care and decrease caregiver burden, and improve patient function. In order to accomplish these goals, it is imperative that clinicians develop individualized treatment strategies based on shared decision-making, available treatment options, and patient specific factors. This CMEOCast podcast episode highlights how best to match treatment options with patients, with a specific focus on the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin as a treatment for patients with spasticity. At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to: - Recognize the clinical manifestations of spasticity. - Develop individualized treatment strategies based on shared goals, available treatment options and patient-specific factors.
