Community Practice Connections™: Medical Crossfire®: Foundations in Outpatient Administration of Infused Therapies for COVID-19: Keeping Patients Out of the Hospital

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, and pharmacists who specialize in administering infused therapies in an outpatient setting are invited to participate.

Activity Overview
COVID-19 is a rapidly evolving global public health threat that has affected virtually all aspects of patient care, including the treatment of patients with other acute and chronic diseases. The cause of COVID-19 is SARS-CoV-2, a β-coronavirus. Recent research efforts have focused on the development of vaccines, new antiviral agents, convalescent plasma infusions, and monoclonal antibodies for either the prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 have the potential for both therapeutic and prophylactic applications. Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies directed against SARS-CoV-2 have been developed and are under investigation in clinical trials. In addition, several of these drugs have recently been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and drugs made available under FDA emergency use authorization (EUA).

This Community Practice Connection™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from the Medical Crossfire®: Foundations in Outpatient Administration of Infused Therapies for COVID-19: Keeping Patients out of the Hospital held in February and March 2021. This unique and engaging multi-media activity is ideal for the community-based clinician and focuses on the practical aspects of managing patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, putting recent clinical trial data into clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Discuss best practices for administration of infused therapies in patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection at elevated risk of hospitalization
Identify signs and symptoms of potential adverse reactions to infused neutralizing antibody therapy in patients with confirmed with COVID-19 infection
Incorporate best practices for patient counseling and education regarding the administration of infused therapies in patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection
