Challenges and Opportunities in HIV: The Aging HIV Population

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is intended for infectious disease and HIV specialist physicians and other clinicians involved in the care of patients with HIV infection.

Program Overview
Patients with HIV have a life expectancy nearly equal to that of the general population, which means that clinicians must not only manage long-standing HIV but also recognize common comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, renal disease, osteoporosis or low bone mineral density, and neurocognitive disorders. Multidisciplinary care is the key to managing these aging patients, and all clinicians should be aware of the increased risks for comorbidities these patients face because of their HIV and because of unwanted effects of certain ART regimens. This series of interactive, short cases provides scenarios of patients with HIV and comorbidities to detail screening, routine monitoring, drug-drug interactions, and optimal switching strategies for commonly occurring comorbidities in aging patients with HIV.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Recognize common comorbidities and polypharmacy issues in aging patients with HIV
Participate in multidisciplinary care to optimize HIV management for patients with complex disease
