Overview / Abstract:

Therapy Tidbits – Summer 2021 is a 1-hour online continuing education (CE) course comprised of select articles from the Summer 2021 issue of The National Psychologist, a private, independent, quarterly newspaper intended to keep psychologists informed about practice issues. The articles included in this course are:

• Improving Health through Community Policies Gains Momentum – Provides an overview of the Blue Zone Project and the impact on community members’ health.
• Psychologists Will Be on Front Lines of Helping Recovering COVID Patients – Describes a variety of after-effects of COVID on patients’ mental health and offers strategies for supporting them.
• Retailers Could Help Shape Future of Mental Health Treatment – Discusses the need for affordable access to mental health care and how local retailers, such as CVS, are filing that gap.
• FDA Approval of New Alzheimer’s Drug is Fraught with Controversy – An overview of the FDA approval, and researchers’ criticism, of the drug aducanumab.
• My Patient May Be Placing Others at Risk of Contracting COVID-19: What Should I Do? – The authors offer advice on discussing with patients the possible need for quarantining.
• Posting of Test Questions Online: Both Ill-Advised and Illegal – Highlights the need to prevent and contest the online publication of psychological and educational assessment questions.
• Prescribing Psychologists Share Stories of their Journey – Three pioneers among prescribing psychologists in Illinois share their stories.
• Are We Genetically Predisposed to Conflict and Violence? (Viewpoint) – The author questions whether combining knowledge derived from genetic and neuroscience research will allow us to develop a more complete understanding of human emotions, cognitions, behavior, and personality development.
• Experiential Learning Comes from Cultural Immersion and Autism – A psychologist, who is on the autistic spectrum, shares a personal account of living and practicing in rural Alaska.
