Overview / Abstract:

This course helps you screen for, respond to, document, and manage your patients who are suffering from abusive relationships. Includes up to 17 patient cases in 5 different specialties.

Outcome Objectives:

As a result of completing this activity, the participant will be better able to:

- Screen patients for intimate partner violence (IPV) and appropriately respond to disclosures of abuse.
- Recognize patterns of abuse and properly document IPV.
- Assess the safety of IPV victims.
- Report and refer IPV victims to appropriate community agencies.
- Recognize and support patients' readiness to change their violent situation.

M. Denise Dowd, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Emergency Medicine of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri. She is attending physician in the Emergency Department of The Children's Mercy Hospital and Chief, Section of Injury Prevention. Dr. Dowd has research interests in injury prevention and pediatric violence prevention.

Christine Fiore, PhD is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at The University of Montana. Dr. Fiore has been investigating the application of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change to understanding stay-leave decision-making in women in violent relationships since 1994. She is involved in teaching, clinical practice, and consultation for women experiencing domestic violence.

Jennifer Gunter MD, FRCSC, FACOG practices gynecology and directs the pelvic pain treatment program at Kaiser’s San Francisco Medical Center. Dr. Gunter has clinical and research interests in lower genital tract disorders, chronic pain, infectious diseases, and intimate partner violence.

Randa Kutob, MD is an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson and Director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education. She is a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine with extensive teaching, clinical work, and research in the arena of cross-cultural care and chronic disease prevention and treatment.

Penny Randall, MD, MBA is the Director of Medical and Scientific Services for Quintiles, Inc., a global contract research organization. Dr. Randall's background is in academic medicine, having been on the department of psychiatry faculty at Yale and more recently University of California, Irvine. She is the author of several peer-reviewed papers on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is board certified in psychiatry and addictionology.

Zita Surprenant, MD, MPH is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Kansas University Medical Center. Dr. Surprenant is actively engaged in family violence research in the areas of health care training of intimate partner violence, implementation of domestic violence protocols within hospital and private practice settings, and development of hospital-based advocacy for victims of domestic violence.

Ellen Taliaferro, MD, FACEP is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Emergency Medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. In addition to being an attending faculty physician at Parkland Hospital until 2001, Dr. Taliaferro also founded and directed the Violence Intervention Prevention (VIP) Center at Parkland Hospital. Currently she lives in the Bay Area of Northern California and serves as a consultant for violence prevention in health care. Dr. Taliaferro has been specializing in the area of violence prevention for over 11 years.

Richard Amini, MD is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he is currently a fellow in the Clinical Scholars Program. Dr. Amini is fellowship trained in Ultrasound and has a special interest in Evidence Based Medicine education.

Hans Bradshaw, MD is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he is currently the Medical Director for The University of Arizona Student Emergency Medicine Services organization. Dr. Bradshaw is also an Examiner in training for the Southern Arizona Child Advocacy Center.

Dale P. Woolridge, MD, PhD, FAAEM, FAAP, FACEP is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he is currently the director of the Pediatric and Emergency Medicine combined residency training program. Dr. Woolridge is the medical director of the Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center; the primary referral center for all children in southern Arizona subjected to abuse and neglect. He is the Committee Chair for the Arizona State Health Department’s Pediatric Advisory Council for Emergency Services (PACES) and committee member of the Arizona EMS Advisory Council.
