Novel Strategies for Improving Outcomes in Children with Uncontrolled Moderate-to-Severe Asthma – Patient Simulations

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of allergists, immunologists, pediatric pulmonologists, respiratory clinicians, primary care/internal medicine clinicians, and other healthcare professionals who manage pediatric patients with asthma.

Program Overview
Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the pediatric population, and although existing medications can reduce symptoms, management is still suboptimal. The availability of novel biologic therapies for the treatment of asthma requires clinicians to better understand when and in which patients to consider them.

In the second of a 2-part series, this activity consists of three (3) AliveSimTMpatient simulation case scenarios which will address disease severity and treatment selection in patients with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe asthma. Clinicians will learn through the cases about the inflammatory markers associated with moderate-to-severe asthma, how to individualize and select optimal treatment, and communicate effectively with patients and caregivers about the management of moderate-to-severe asthma.

Each scenario will immerse clinicians in “virtual practice sessions” utilizing the AliveSimTMVirtual Practice and Coaching platform, where participants safely practice applying new clinical concepts in asthma. Participants will feel like they’re “in it”, immersed in a series of real-life clinical situations of these patients with asthma. They will interact with virtual peers, make decisions, and receive expert coaching to recognize optimal decision strategies in each scenario.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Assess their competency as they receive expert feedback on decisions
Recognize patterns of optimal decision-making used by clinical experts
Gain confidence applying new knowledge in diverse situations
Increase their comfort level in incorporating changes to their clinical practice
