Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity was developed for HIV specialists and infectious disease specialists, plus other physicians with an interest in HIV care, including primary care physicians and emergency medicine physicians.

Program Overview
Infectious disease specialists David Hardy, MD, AAHIVS and David Alain Wohl, MD explore ways to optimize therapy selections and switch strategies in the treatment and management of HIV, including considerations for treating HIV in a pandemic landscape. Topics will include current and ongoing disparities in HIV treatment and strategies to overcome them, an introduction to the rapid initiation of ART, clinical trial data on the use of 2- and 3-drug regimens, an exploration of the uses of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (ART), the use of shared decision-making to engage PLWH in treatment decisions, and suggestions on how to optimize treatment outcomes for PLWH.Case studies will be discussed to examine how to apply these principles to common clinical scenarios, including overcoming pill fatigue and addressing barriers in treatment-naïve individuals.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

-Examine the results from recent trials on 2-drug regimens vs 3-drug regimens for HIV, including efficacy, tolerability, and safety
-Compare and contrast the latest evidence regarding new and emerging antiretroviral therapy options for treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients
-Identify those patients who would benefit from new and emerging 2-drug regimens, including long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy
-Develop personalized treatment strategies for patients with HIV based on patient-specific factors and in alignment with the latest evidence
