Raising Awareness of Uterine Fibroids: A Patient-Centered Approach to Optimize Outcomes in Rural and Underserved Settings

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience

This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview

Uterine fibroids are common, non-malignant tumors of the uterus that occur in up to 70% of women of reproductive age. While most cases are asymptomatic, approximately 25% of impacted individuals experience clinical symptoms that are severe enough to require treatment and negatively impact quality of life. Women in rural and underserved communities, particularly Black women, are disproportionately impacted and are more likely to experience severe symptoms and post-surgical complications. This CME/CE activity will review best practices for assessment and diagnosis of uterine fibroids as well as current and emerging treatments for the condition. Strategies for overcoming barriers to management of uterine fibroids in rural and underserved communities will also be addressed.

This enduring activity is a recorded session from the 3rd Annual Rural Health Clinical Congress that took place on November 20, 2021.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Recognize the signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids to improve timely diagnosis
Integrate an individualized approach for treatment of uterine fibroids based on current evidence, symptoms, and patient preferences
Utilize strategies for improving care for patients with uterine fibroids in rural and underserved areas
