New Insights and Avenues for Improved Patient Outcomes in Immune Thrombocytopenia

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Gain expert insight on new treatment approaches to improve outcomes for patients with immune thrombocytopenia, including individualized treatment for patients who relapse and strategies to alleviate and improve supportive care. This discussion is led by Howard Liebman, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, and Allison Miller lmahiyerobo, MSN, APN, Advanced Practice Nurse at Hematology and Oncology Physicians of Englewood. Statement of Need
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a heterogenous disorder in which patients develop an autoimmune response to platelets that results in severe cytopenia and places them at risk for bleeding events (Neunert, 2021). The lack of specific criteria makes diagnosis challenging for clinicians, and understanding the pathogenesis is crucial to treatment management (Ghanima et al, 2021). Standard first-line therapy does not result in sustained responses in the majority of patients. In addition, the personalization of therapy and supportive care to patients’ individual goals of treatment remain an unmet need (Cooper et al, 2021). In this activity, Howard Liebman, MD, will discuss how to diagnose patients with primary and secondary ITP and how to apply emerging data on the efficacy and safety of therapies to individualize treatment selection for patients upon relapse. Allison Miller Imahiyerobo, MSN, APN, will provide insight on how to support patients in order to alleviate symptoms and improve health-related quality of life.

Target Audience
Hematology/oncology physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, oncology nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with ITP.

Learning Objectives
• Assess the pathogenesis of ITP and its relationship to differential diagnosis and therapeutic approach
• Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action of current and emerging ITP therapies
• Apply supportive care strategies that can be used to help patients with ITP achieve their goals of therapy
