Overview / Abstract:

CLASS OVERVIEW
This CE will allow providers to gain a solid foundation regarding transgender healthcare and the skills necessary to provide healthcare for transgender patients in a safe, supportive and welcoming environment

EDUCATIONAL/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Recognize and apply gender confirming and gender-nonconforming terminology to current practice
2. Review epidemiology of the LGBTQIA+ population
3. Design a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for patients within the LGBTQIA+ community
4. Review therapeutic approaches for patients with Gender Dysphoria
5. Review mental health considerations and impact pre-and post-hormonal and/or surgical treatment for transgender patients
6. Evaluate mental health and medical risks prior to starting gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)
7. Review the benefits, side effects, risks, expectations, and limitations of gender affirming GAHT
8. Design a safe and appropriate treatment and monitoring plan for patients on GAHT therapy suited to the individual’s goals
9. Identify a variety of gender-affirming surgical procedures
10. Review the benefits, side effects, risks, expectations, and limitations of gender affirming surgical procedures
11. Analyze and offer appropriate secondary treatment considerations for patients with risk factors for GAHT
12. Review additional considerations and concomitant conditions or diagnoses in transgender healthcare
13. Apply transgender healthcare concepts to patients in your clinical setting

Dr. Hajer G. Ibrahim completed her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting at Benedictine University
in Lisle, IL in 2014. She then went on to complete her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Western University of Health
Sciences (WesternU) in Pomona, CA in 2019. She then went on to complete a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency at the
VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHS) in 2020. She stayed on to complete a PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency
at the VALLHS in 2021. Since August 2021, she currently practices as a Clinical Psychiatric / Mental Health Pharmacist at
Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center (KP SJO) in San Jose, CA and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of
Pharmacy Practice and Administration at WesternU, in Pomona, CA. She is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist
(BCPS), Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP), and holds her Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) license. She
has a passion for mental health and LGBTQIA+ care and is an advocate for both respectively. She also enjoys teaching,
precepting, and mentoring pharmacy trainees. She precepts various levels of trainees including pharmacy students,
PGY1 pharmacy residents, and PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residents on their Adult Psychiatry rotations

Dr. Ranya Garcia is a clinical pharmacist specialist in primary care, women’s health, and gender-affirming care. She
has extensive expertise in LGBTQIA+ healthcare, education, and a has passion for bridging LGBTQIA+ related
disparities. Her initiatives in LGBTQIA+ program development and activism has led to a shift in cultural norms,
improved competency, and increased accessibility and resources for LGBTQIA+ Veterans. She is a recognized subject
matter expert in gender-affirming hormone therapy and published author. Dr. Garcia is frequently invited to speak on
LGBTQIA+ health within federal, public, and private sectors across the country. As a wife of an OIF and OEF Navy
Veteran, working at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and caring for all Veterans is very personal to Dr. Garcia.
She is an advocate for all Veterans and has a passion for empowering her patients live their best life, as a Veterans
Health Administration-trained Whole Health Coach. Dr. Garcia is also a member of the VA Loma Linda residency advisory
board and has precepted post-doctoral pharmacy residents for almost two decades. She has a passion for teaching and
advancing the profession of pharmacy with the goal of increasing awareness and preserving sensitivity to the humanistic
aspect of care

Dr. Hyma Gogineni is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Preventive Medicine, Bariatric Interdisciplinary Team, Heart Failure
Interdisciplinary Team and women’s health at VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. She has extensive expertise in Tobacco
Use Disorder, Alcohol Use Disorder, Metabolic Syndrome, Comprehensive Medication Therapy Management. She has a
passion for teaching student pharmacists and pharmacists to enhance the skills needed to advance pharmacy profession.
As part of this mission, she has been partnering with experts in pharmacy field to offer continuing pharmacy education
(CPE) programs at the State and National level. Dr. Gogineni is currently involved in training medical students and
residents at VA Loma Linda Healthcare System in Preventive Medicine Services. She is currently involved in an upcoming
project that will be the future of many veterans to gather information, which is VA Virtual Medical Center (VAVMC) and
she is responsible for providing patient medication handouts to upload in the VAVMC for various medical conditions
and will be conducting virtual pharmacy visits in the VAVMC.
