Community Practice Connections™: Anemia of Chronic Kidney Disease – Understanding the Disease to Improve Patient Outcomes

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward internists and other internal medicine specialists. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in CKD anemia management will be invited to participate as well.

Activity Overview

Anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can result in reduced quality of life, increased risk of cardiovascular problems, and even death. Optimal care for these patients includes supporting their iron levels and red blood cell function, but barriers to monitoring and treatment exist. Insights into the pathophysiology of anemia in these patients have led to the development of investigational agents with a novel mechanism of action.

This Community Practice Connections™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from a symposium presented at the 2022 ACP Internal Medicine Meeting held in April. This unique and engaging multimedia activity is ideal for the community-based clinician and focuses on the practical aspects of managing patients with anemia in CKD, putting recent clinical trial data into clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, you should be better able to:

Describe the clinical burden of anemia in patients with CKD
Discuss the pathophysiology of anemia in CKD, including therapeutic targets
Apply current assessment strategies to accurately diagnose patients with anemia and CKD based on clinical presentation
Develop appropriate therapeutic regimens for patients with anemia and CKD based on goals of therapy
