Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of pulmonologists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with COPD.

Program Overview

The COPD Visual Toolkit features a discussion between pulmonologist Fernando Martinez, MD, and primary care physician Barbara Yawn, MD. As they review tools for COPD management, Dr. Martinez and Dr. Yawn will discuss COPD cases that are illustrated with whiteboard animations clips to enhance the learning experience. This activity will include an infographic with symptom burden questionnaires, treatment algorithms, and resources for patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Evaluate best practices in the diagnosis of COPD
Apply strategies and best practices in the treatment of COPD
Manage acute exacerbation events and comorbidities
Discuss barriers to an accurate assessment of disease burden

Fernando Martinez, MD, MS, is Chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Martinez’s research interests include COPD, interstitial lung disease, lung transplantation, and lung volume reduction. Dr. Martinez is a member of American Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Fleischner Society. Previously, he was a member of the American Thoracic Society Committees which generated guidelines for the management of COPD, respiratory infections, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Dr. Martinez is currently a member of the GOLD Science Committee and sits on several editorial boards, including the Journal of COPD and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Barbara Yawn, MD, MSc, FAAFP is a family physician and clinical researcher with 14 years’ experience as a rural physician and 25 years as a clinical researcher. Dr. Yawn has authored over 350 peer reviewed publications and several books and chapters in a variety of topics from rural primary care to chronic respiratory diseases, primarily asthma and COPD. She was a member of the 2007 Expert Review Panel that developed the current asthma care guidelines and the WHO panel that developed the International Primary Care Respiratory guidelines for obstructive lung disease. She has served on 6 other national evidence-based guideline panels. Dr. Yawn has recently retired from the position as Director of Research at the Olmsted Medical Center but continues research around the US and education directed to primary care physicians and other clinicians.
