Community Practice Connections™: Expert Illustrations and Commentaries: Nephrology Nurse Perspectives in Anemia in CKD

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward nephrology nurses. Primary care physicians and nephrologists who treat anemia in CKD will also be invited to participate in the online enduring activity.

Program Overview
For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), anemia is associated with major complications, including impaired cognition, sleep disturbance, increased cardiac risk, lower quality of life, and increased medical expenses. Conventional treatment of anemia in these patients has focused on the use of exogenously administered erythropoietin with intravenous iron, as required. Whereas the benefits of such therapy are well-established, there are several limitations, including increased risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. New agents are in late-stage development that may address some of the shortcomings of the conventional treatments for CKD. Fundamental changes in the clinical paradigm of treating CKD will occur as more of these agents are approved.

This Community Practice Connection™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from Expert Illustrations and Commentaries Live: Nephrology Nurse Perspectives in Anemia in CKD, held in May 2022. This unique and engaging multimedia activity is ideal for the community-based clinician; it focuses on the practical aspects of managing patients with anemia and CKD, putting recent clinical trial data into a clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Describe the clinical burden of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease
Discuss the pathophysiology of anemia in chronic kidney disease, including therapeutic targets
Apply current assessment strategies to accurately diagnose patients with anemia and chronic kidney disease based on clinical presentation
Develop appropriate therapeutic regimens for patients with anemia and chronic kidney disease based on goals of therapy
