Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, social workers/case managers, and other health professionals who serve patients in rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview
Early antiretroviral therapy can reduce transmission of HIV as well as HIV-related morbidity and mortality. Discussing these benefits is therefore essential for any persons newly diagnosed with HIV. This video, which is Part 2 of a three-part series titled Patient-Centered HIV Care in Rural and Underserved Communities: Strategies for Improving Communication, Engagement, and Support, demonstrates how to start the conversation about initiating antiretroviral therapy on the same day the diagnosis is given and the benefits of using HIV treatment as prevention.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Use evidence-based communication strategies to counsel patients about risk factors for HIV transmission, how and why it is important to maintain viral suppression, and the implications of treatment as prevention
