Advancing Management of Hereditary Angioedema: Collaborative Strategies for Meeting the Needs in Rural and Underserved Communities

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for allergists/immunologists and other healthcare professionals who serve patients from rural and underserved communities.

Program Overview
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by unpredictable, recurrent, and painful episodes of swelling that can be disabling and potentially life-threatening. Despite recent advances in treatment and updated guidelines, patients with this condition face multiple barriers to care including long diagnostic delays, misdiagnosis, and undertreatment. These challenges are amplified in rural and underserved communities, where access to approved therapies and clinicians with expertise in managing HAE is limited. In this on-demand CME/CE activity, expert faculty will discuss ways to enhance collaboration and improve access to care for patients with HAE from rural and underserved communities. Genetic screening, diagnostic evaluation, and the latest clinical evidence on new therapies for HAE will also be reviewed.

This activity was recorded in July 2022. Please note that any data, information, and guidance presented in the activity are subject to change.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Apply current recommendations for assessment of HAE to improve its early diagnosis in rural and underserved populations
Evaluate the safety and efficacy of available treatment options for HAE including on-demand therapies, short-term prophylaxis, and long-term prophylaxis
Develop comprehensive, personalized management plans for patients with HAE based on current guideline recommendations and best practices
Employ effective strategies to best support primary care clinicians and the patients with HAE they serve from rural and underserved settings across the continuum of care
