Community Practice Connections™: Expert Approaches to Preventing Graft Failure in Renal Transplant Recipients

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed toward transplant specialists, nephrologists, and transplant surgeons. Advance practice providers (nurse practitioners, physician assistants) and other health care practitioners are invited to participate.

Program Overview

Renal transplantation is an effective treatment option for patients with end-stage renal disease. Rejection due to an immunologic reaction of the recipient’s immune system to donor antigens can limit the long-term survival of the transplant. Failing kidney transplants escalate morbidity and mortality beyond that caused by chronic kidney disease, including increased hazard of death, hospitalization, and costs of medical care. Improved approaches to preventing graft failure are needed to minimize these significant burdens.

This Community Practice Connection™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from the American Transplant Congress, held in June 2022. This unique and engaging multi-media activity is ideal for the community-based clinician and focuses on the practical aspects of preventing graft failure in renal transplant recipients (RTRs), putting recent clinical trial data into clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better prepared to:

Describe the pathophysiology of transplant rejection in RTRs
Identify risks associated with transplant rejection
Discuss treatment regimens that can reduce rejection and extend transplant survival in RTRs
