Patient-Centered Management of Hereditary Angioedema: Strategies for Improving Care in Rural and Underserved Communities

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who care for patients from rural and underserved areas.

Program Overview
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder that causes recurrent, unpredictable, and potentially life-threatening episodes of swelling. In rural and underserved primary care settings, management can be particularly challenging due to misdiagnosis, unfamiliarity with approved therapies, and limited access to specialists with expertise in managing the condition. In this on-demand CME/CE activity, expert faculty will review current recommendations for screening and evidence-based treatment options for HAE, including on-demand therapies and short-and long-term prophylaxis. Strategies to improve access to care and collaborative management of patients with HAE in rural and underserved communities will also be addressed.

This enduring activity is a recorded session from Rural Health Clinical Congress Spring 2022 that took place on May 21, 2022.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Identify symptoms suggestive of HAE as well as causes and triggers of attack
Differentiate acute, on-demand therapies, short-term prophylaxis, and long-term prophylaxis for HAE
Apply individualized, patient-centered strategies for disease management and monitoring to improve quality of life and patient outcomes
Utilize evidence-based strategies to improve access to care and collaborative management of patients with HAE who reside in rural and underserved communities
