Diabetic Eye Care Prime Time™: Meeting the Guidelines Around Screening and Treatment

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to address the educational needs of primary care providers (PCPs) (ie, internists, family practitioners, nurse practitioners, and PAs), endocrinologists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, and residents.

Program Overview
Diabetic retinopathy (DR)/diabetic macular edema (DME) continues to affect greater numbers of patients with diabetes. Join our multidisciplinary panel for an engaging discussion regarding DR/DME and the importance and urgency of appropriate vision screenings for your patients with diabetes. Special focus will be given to how duration and control of diabetes affect vision, strategies to improve collaborative care among multidisciplinary physicians, and what gaps clinicians need to fill regarding patient education around DR/DME to improve adherence to diabetes care plans and to promote and encourage vision screenings.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Describe the natural history of DR/DME, with an emphasis on its progressive nature, which underscores the need for earlier diagnosis and treatment to prevent the development of vision-threatening complications
Recognize key factors for patient education that are needed to catalyze uptake of recommended eye care in patients with diabetes
Identify collaborative strategies that can be used to enhance the multidisciplinary care of patients with or at risk for DR/DME to foster earlier recognition, treatment, and long-term management of DR/DME across the continuum
