Burst CME: Selecting an Appropriate Influenza Vaccine for Adults 65 Years and Older

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward geriatric medicine physicians, primary care physicians, infectious disease physicians, internal medicine physicians, NPs, PAs, and nurses who manage older patients at risk for influenza.

Program Overview
This Burst CME: Selecting an Appropriate Influenza Vaccine for Adults 65 Years and Older is an interview-based program in which an expert reviews the 3 quadrivalent influenza vaccines currently specified for older adults, with 2 vaccines specifically indicated for adults 65 years and older. These vaccines protect against 4 strains of influenza and are designed to provide increased immunogenicity and, therefore, greater protection in the older patient population. While the decision to obtain an annual influenza vaccine is ultimately left to a patient’s discretion, the expert also discusses the role of clinicians in counseling patients regarding benefits and risks of vaccination against influenza so that patients can make informed decisions.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
Evaluate the safety and efficacy of influenza vaccines that are approved for adults 65 years of age and older.
Develop patient-specific recommendations for influenza prevention in adults 65 years and older according to guideline recommendations.
