Part 1: Understanding the Fundamentals of Pain

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team.

Program Overview
Pain is a pervasive problem in the United States that poses many challenges to clinicians and patients. The potential for opioid misuse, abuse, and addiction contributes to the complexity of appropriate pain management. This CME/CE activity, which is Part 1 of a three-part series titled Tackling the Opioid Crisis: Strategies to Improve Best Practices and Patient Outcomes, will review the fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions and mechanisms of acute and chronic pain. Tools to document pain characteristics and guide management decisions throughout treatment will also be addressed.

This activity meets most states’ requirements for opioid education and is fully compliant with the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) education requirement issued by the FDA in September 2018.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Describe the fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions and mechanisms of pain
Appropriately assess patients with pain and identify potential risk factors for abuse or addiction
