Part 2: Best Practices for Prescribing Opioids in Primary Care

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This activity is designed specifically for primary care clinicians, registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team.

Program Overview
Pain continues to be a major public health problem in the United States, causing reductions in patients’ daily function and quality of life. Despite the benefits of opioid analgesics, untreated and undertreated acute and chronic pain persists. Thus, education on safe opioid prescribing and comprehensive pain management remains essential to ensuring patients with pain are treated appropriately while mitigating potential risks. This CME/CE activity, which is Part 2 of a three-part series titled Tackling the Opioid Crisis: Strategies to Improve Best Practices and Patient Outcomes, will review components of an effective treatment plan including the establishment of treatment goals and multimodal management approaches with pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. Best practices for initiating treatment for acute and chronic pain, when to refer, and how to taper opioid therapy will also be discussed.

This activity meets most states’ requirements for opioid education and is fully compliant with the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) education requirement issued by the FDA in September 2018.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Develop an individualized plan of care to safely initiate opioid treatment, while maximizing efficacy and minimizing risks
Review general and product-specific information about immediate-release (IR) and extended-release/long-acting (ER/LA) opioid analgesics
Describe the different therapeutic options for pain, including non-pharmacologic approaches and pharmacologic (non-opioid and opioid analgesics) therapies
