Community Practice Connections: Optimizing Recognition and Management of Acute Hepatic Porphyria

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward hepatologists and gastroenterologists. Nurses, specialty nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians involved in the management of patients with liver diseases are invited to attend.

Program Overview
Acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) is a rare genetic disease caused by enzymatic defects that result in the accumulation of toxic intermediates in the liver. Because AHP symptoms are nonspecific, they are often misdiagnosed as symptoms of other more common conditions. AHP management includes treatment of acute attacks, prevention of attacks, and monitoring for long-term complications.

This Community Practice Connections™ program provides an in-depth review of some of the key highlights from a symposium held at AASLD: The Liver Meeting in November 2022. This unique and engaging multimedia activity is ideal for the community-based clinician and focuses on the practical aspects of managing patients with AHP, putting recent clinical trial data into clinical context. The program is designed for those who did not attend the live meeting and to help reinforce learnings for those who did.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
Describe the pathophysiology of AHP, including therapeutic targets
Apply current assessment strategies to accurately diagnose patients with AHP based on clinical presentation
Evaluate the efficacy and safety of clinical trial data of current AHP therapies
