Overview / Abstract: |
Clinicians care for diverse patient populations whose physical and mental health and access to healthcare is differentially impacted by their race, sex, language, literacy, socioeconomic status, environmental exposures, and other unique factors. Our healthcare teams are similarly impacted by these factors. Ethnic minorities and patients of color experience widespread racism and discrimination in many aspects of life including housing, employment, and health care. A significant body of literature on the role of structural and systemic racism and discrimination continues to be published in the areas of health and well-being. To address these issues, many non-profit and corporate organizations and institutions are developing anti-racism policies to reduce discrimination. While progress continues, there are many institutions and individuals without a systems-based process in place to make the changes. The challenge is further compounded when many people do not share the same definitions or understanding of these issues. This course is designed to move beyond dialogue on bias, racism and discrimination towards understanding what steps can be taken to improve the care of our diverse patient populations. |
