PEERx: Pharmacy Ethics Continuing Education Series

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Ethics Module 1: Priority of Pharmacy Ethics in Healthcare
Ethics in pharmacy is priority for those that work in any area of pharmacy practice. Pharmacy personnel should have a basic understanding of the ethical principles that are recognized by pharmacy leadership. By engaging in conversations about ethics and being familiar with historical examples in pharmacy where ethics were breached, pharmacy personnel can work to prevent future ethical tragedies.

Ethics Module 2: Evolution of Healthcare Ethics
Healthcare is quickly changing, and healthcare professionals must be ready to evolve. Decision-making strategies are essential to ethical decisions on existing issues and future scenarios. Practicing these decision-making strategies in a non-rushed environment will assist the practitioner in making decisions under pressure.

Ethics Module 3: Importance of Business Ethics to the Pharmacy Community
Pharmacy is a challenging profession. Add business into the mix, and you have a combination that creates many ethical dilemmas. This program will introduce the ethical principles of pharmacy and business and review a sound decision-making process. The discussed scenarios will assist an owner, supervisor, or manager in better preparing for difficult daily situations in pharmacy practice.

Ethics Module 4: Compliance to Care
Everyone on the pharmacy team must work together to maintain compliance. However, compliance to what? Regulations, employer policies and procedures, insurance mandates, and more. How about compliance to our ethical principles? This activity will help the pharmacy professional understand why we have all these requirements, why documentation is crucial, and how to keep up with the ever-changing world of compliance.

Ethics Module 5: Ethics of Stress in the Pharmacy Workforce
Stress at work can affect your health and the health of your patients. Ethical considerations can put your license at risk. But what are you supposed to do about it? This session will give you some statistics that will not surprise you, offer an opportunity to share situations you have experienced, and offer solutions to reduce risk.

Ethics Module 6: Preparing Pharmacy for the Next Crisis
Given the suddenness and general unknown of the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists were thrown into this public health crisis with little preparation and continue to be on the front lines without much acknowledgment. Despite previously designed emergency and disaster policies, this new virus response did not fit any of the molds of well-laid plans. This activity will explore the ethics of responding appropriately to a crisis that seems to change daily. From emergency preparedness, communication, purchasing tactics, and justice of distribution of supplies, the COVID-19 pandemic teaches the health care community how unprepared we were for a situation unlike anything we have seen in our lifetime. Pharmacists and pharmacy leadership will never be the same after this pandemic and the lessons learned will be valuable for our new normal.
