Highlights From Thyroid Eye Disease Forum: Drilling Down and Digging Deeper to Ensure Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune disorder believed to result from the stimulation of several receptors located in the orbital fibroblasts. It is frequently misdiagnosed, due to both its heterogeneous clinical presentation and a failure on the part of clinicians to understand the relationship between TED and hyperthyroidism. Misdiagnosis can place patients at risk, as management of TED is most effective during the initial, active phase of the disease. However, differential diagnosis can

be achieved with the assistance of imaging, and early treatment may limit disfigurement and reduce vision loss. Healthcare

professionals should be knowledgeable about the presentation of these patients, which includes patients with dry eye disease,

as well as conventional and new treatment options available for patients with TED. In this monograph, expert faculty drill down deeper into the diagnosis of and treatments for TED,

including teprotumumab"the first and only medical agent approved by the US FDA for the treatment of TED.
