Overview / Abstract: |
The prevalence of peanut allergy in children continues to increase, significantly disrupting the lives of the millions of affected individuals as well as their families. The substantial burden and associated poor quality of life for children with peanut allergy stems from potential environmental dangers and the fear of anaphylaxis. Updated guidelines provide guidance on the early introduction of peanut-containing foods to infants for the prevention of peanut allergy. However, although prevention is important, appropriately diagnosing and treating persons with peanut allergy is a key priority. Practitioners caring for children and young adults should be apprised of the benefits and risks associated with the various peanut allergy immunotherapy options. In this CME activity, faculty review the latest guidelines and supporting evidence for the early introduction of peanut-containing foods to prevent allergy in infants. Experts also discuss best practices for the diagnosis and treatment of peanut allergy in children and adolescents and review the currently available peanut allergy immunotherapy options, including oral immunotherapy. |
