Acromegaly: Improving Timely Diagnosis, Assessment, and Treatment

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Acromegaly, caused by excessive growth hormone production from the anterior pituitary gland, results in disproportionate growth of body tissues and other metabolic dysfunctions. With causes divided into primary GH excess, ectopic or iatrogenic GH excess, and excess growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), adult patients have the characteristic facial features of a large lower jaw, a prominent forehead, and large hands and feet. These features occur after the growth plates are fused, distinguishing acromegaly from gigantism, which occurs before the fusion of growth plates. Join us as we review clinical findings and presenting symptoms of patients that may be at high risk for acromegaly, along with diagnostic strategies that allow for earlier treatment selection.
