Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Unmasking Disparities and Forging a Path to Equitable Care

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This comprehensive continuing education (CE) monograph delves into the complexities of HCM, an autosomal dominant genetic disorder marked by increased left ventricular hypertrophy. This condition can lead to significant health complications, such as heart failure, arrhythmias, stroke, and sudden cardiac death. Despite the impact of HCM on patient health and well-being, a gap persists in the understanding of the racial/ethnic and gender-based disparities among healthcare professionals. This gap influences the diagnosis and management of HCM and its subtype, cardiac amyloidosis (which includes transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis and light-chain cardiac amyloidosis). It also contributes to underdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis, resulting in increased healthcare use and suboptimal patient outcomes.

This CE program is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their understanding and ability to provide equitable care for patients with HCM, thereby improving patient outcomes and addressing healthcare disparities. This monograph aims provides a patient advocacy point of view, screening strategies, clinical cases on differential diagnosis and management, as well as targeted treatments, and review focusing on the drivers of racial/ethnicity-based disparities in HCM care.
