Overview / Abstract: |
The differential diagnosis and workup of a suspected inherited retinal disease (IRD) can be challenging, requiring the expertise of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. Guidelines released in 2022 by the American Academy of Ophthalmology provide recommendations and clinical genetic assessments for patients with IRDs. Genetic counseling is essential to help patients understand the genetic test results, their implications for prognosis, family planning, and therapeutic decisions. Genetic testing can help to confirm the diagnosis of IRDs, guide management, and potentially confirm eligibility to participate in ongoing clinical studies. Gene therapy for IRDs continues to evolve"with several gene therapy candidates offering the potential to revolutionize the management paradigm for these diseases currently being evaluated in clinical studies. In this CE activity, experts in the field review collaborative care strategies that enhance the diagnosis and management of IRDs and evaluate emerging gene therapies based on recent safety and efficacy data. |
